WinLABS Tip of the Week –
Communicating with USBC
The current version of WinLABS is
9.9.24 released
Aug. 11, 2009. If
you are using a previous version,
please select Update Software from
the WinLABS help menu to update your
system.
Have you ever tried to connect to
USBC or send a transmittal using
WinLABS and received this message?
“Can not connect to the FTP
server”
This message most often means that
something is loaded on your computer
that is blocking WinLABS from
accessing the USBC FTP server.
Several examples of changes that can
cause you to receive this message:
• Live Updates.
When you install “Live Updates” from
your anti-virus, firewall, or
Internet security program,
there might be changes to that
program which prevents WinLABS from
accessing the FTP server.
• Installing a WinLABS
Patch. When a WinLABS patch
is installed, it might cause
settings on your anti-virus,
firewall, or Internet security
program to be reset and prevent
WinLABS from accessing the FTP
server.
•
Wireless networks.
Wireless networks can be problematic
because the communications process
involves sending information through
routers and firewalls that come with
the network. Be sure to test WinLABS
connectivity before the person that
sets up the system leaves the
premises.
• Satellite Access.
In most cases, FTP file transfer is
not compatible with these systems.
You may have some success with very
small transmittals; however, the
larger the file, the greater the
likelihood that the communication
will fail. If you have satellite,
you might have to use some sort of
dial-up option as a last resort.
Summary
Before calling the WinLABS Support
Team, you could try disabling your
firewall/antivirus software and
click Send/Receive Now to try to
connect again (you do not have to
create another transmittal). Doing
this will temporarily solve many
communications issues. In addition
it will also show that the problems
you are having reside in these
programs.
Although the WinLABS Support Team
has had limited success in
correcting these problems, the local
association is ultimately
responsible for knowing how to use
these programs.
